Let’s face it. Nobody wants to hire a music coach. I don’t & you don’t. That said, I’ve hired many coaches in my life & don’t regret a single one.
Some of you may actually be looking for a personal coach right now. I’d argue that it’s not the coach you want, it’s the accelerated results. If you could get the same results without personal guidance, a coach would be redundant.
It can be argued that everyone can benefit from a coach in a number of areas in their life, but this post is music production related, so let’s talk about it.
Should you hire a music production coach? If so, when is the best time?
This can be a bit of a loaded question because it really depends on your intent. If you are more of a music hobbyist & happy to take your own path of trial & error, by all means, don’t let anyone stop you. There can be a lot of benefit to having a hobby that exercises a lot of self discovery through the trial process.
The fact is that all the information is out there. There is really nothing we can’t learn, if time is not an issue. Unfortunately, time is a commodity most of us want to make the most of, because time is the one thing we can’t get back. Often times you put a life goal on the back burner waiting for the “right” time, only to find years go by with no progress made. This is an easy trap to get caught in & these missed opportunities are the things we typically regret the most later in life.
The overwhelming amount of information out there on forums and YouTube can be enticing but it’ like wading through a sea of conflicting advice. It can leave you feeling more lost and confused than when you started. If more information was all that was needed to reach our goals, we would all be millionaires. Information doesn’t get us across the finish line. What you are really looking for is someone who can lead you to complete transformation.
If you have specific goals with a time limit, you have to ask if it’s currently possible to reach your goal in this specific time at the level of quality you are wanting on your own. If you have music in you that needs to get out & you don’t know exactly the path to get there, a coach could be the best decision you ever made.
If you are leaning toward the idea of getting a coach and wondering when would be a good time, keep this in mind: The best time is almost always before you feel ready. People rarely feel ready to inject a new passion into their life. It often has to become a burning obsession before a person takes that leap. We are naturally afraid of the unknown & change in our lives, even if that change is extremely positive. We tend to make excuses like “I don’t have the time” or “I’m not sure I am worth the investment”.
This is one of the reasons I take cold showers daily. It’s something I almost never want to do & I notice my brain saying “Not now, maybe later. There are more important things to attend to”. Now that I recognize these thought patterns, I just laugh at myself & jump my ass in the shower immediately. After the initial shock of the cold, I almost always feel invigorated afterwords & glad I did it.
This helps me recognize my resistance in other aspects of my life much more easily & know that it’s just the initial action that we fear. Once we have made the decision and taken the action, we realize there was really nothing to fear after all.
It’s like deciding to talk to a pretty girl or a cute guy that you don’t know. The more we practice moving toward discomfort, the more life we are able to fully experience.
If you’ve considered a coach & have a goal that you are committed to, don’t let fear of the unknown hold you back. Leap into that cold shower before your brain tries to talk you out of it. Any hesitation is just procrastination due to the fear that hold most people back from really living their best lives. After the initial shock of taking action, you attune to it quite quickly & start wondering why you didn’t start sooner.
