Many of us have a curse when it comes to making music. Nobody wants to continue doing something they aren’t very good at. Trying to better ourselves is work, not fun. What is fun is exploring something new with the idea that you might create something great.

Often times when you realize you aren’t very good, you drop that and move on to something different, something that requires different skills. Something easier perhaps. Something more fun.

The Allure of New and Shiny

The sad truth is, you probably saw somebody else doing something fantastic and thought, “Yes, that’s what I want to do!” but didn’t even look deeper into why you were attracted to it.

Although certain things will certainly resonate with you, often what is really resonating with you is that feeling of passion and contentment in the person creating this work, not the work itself. This is how companies sell things you don’t need.

Chasing Feelings, Not Tools

When you are feeling uninspired, you aren’t buying a new synth, you are buying that feeling of joy and confidence. What you aren’t considering is that this feeling only really comes with experience and skill. Nothing you buy is going to make you happy for long if you aren’t doing the real work.

If you don’t put in the time, you won’t get the reward.

Then, when the spell has been lifted, you’ll probably search for a new toy that fills you with that excitement all over again.

But does the toy make you a better music producer? Only if it’s being used by someone who is putting in the work & finishing their work, even when it isn’t fun.

Embrace the Struggle

It’s like an endless cycle of chasing that initial thrill without ever sticking around to master anything. The newness wears off, and the hard work sets in, and suddenly it doesn’t seem as appealing.

But here’s the thing: if you want to truly get better, you have to push through that phase. Sure, it’s tough to keep going when you feel like you’re not getting anywhere. It’s frustrating to struggle and not see immediate results. But that’s the reality of becoming good at something.

The people you admire didn’t get there overnight. They put in the hours, faced the challenges, and pushed through the tough times.

Focus on Your Potential

Don’t let the allure of something new and shiny distract you from your true potential. Stick with what you’re passionate about, even when it’s hard. If you can’t push through the tough times, then you aren’t truly passionate enough about your craft. You are probably just seeking the reward without the work.

Embrace the process of learning and growing. Celebrate the small victories along the way, and know that each one is a step toward mastery.

The next time you feel like quitting or switching to something else, take a moment to reflect on why you’re doing what you’re doing. Remind yourself of your goals and the joy that comes from creating something meaningful. Stay focused, stay dedicated, and keep pushing forward. Your hard work will pay off, and you’ll find that the rewards are much greater than any temporary thrill of something new.

Stay the course, keep creating, and never stop striving to be the best you can be. You have the potential to achieve great things, but it all starts with a commitment to improvement and a refusal to give up.
