Finding Creative Strength Through Challenges

I wanted to share a recent experience (as of November 2024) that shifted my perspective on creativity, resilience, and how I approach my music. It’s fresh in my mind, so I hope pulling some nuggets from it will inspire you in your own creative journey.

Over the past few years, I’ve dealt with significant fatigue—something I suspect might be tied to “long COVID.” It’s been a challenge, and at times, it felt like my creative spark was fading. As someone who’s written books on productivity and finished 52 songs in a year, this was a tough pill to swallow. But like anyone, I’ve had to navigate those inner battles and find ways to keep moving forward.

Recently, I took on a new challenge: working in live shows and conventions as an occasional A/V tech. It’s a world I hadn’t fully explored before, and it pushed me far outside my comfort zone. From lighting to audio, video, and even setup and teardown, I had to be ready for anything.

Last week, I worked my first 70+ hour week in decades. For someone used to a more flexible schedule, this was a shock to the system. Early mornings, long days, and back-to-back shifts—it was intense. But here’s what surprised me: I discovered a strength I didn’t realize I still had. Luckily this type of work allows breaks between big jobs.

What stood out most wasn’t just surviving the grind—it was the mindset shift it sparked. After a long day working for someone else, I felt a renewed determination to pour that same energy into my own projects. The thought hit me: If I can do this for others, I can do this for myself.

This experience also deepened my gratitude for the work I get to do with music producers like you. Running my website, coaching, and sharing tools to help others grow in their craft—it’s a privilege. And while the corporate gigs are challenging, they remind me of why I started: to help creatives like you escape the grind and turn your passion into something meaningful.

If you’re juggling a demanding schedule, feeling stuck, or questioning your abilities, know this: You’re capable of more than you think. Even when things feel tough, those small actions and consistent efforts add up.

I’m feeling recharged and ready to give my all to this community. Whether you’re someone who’s short on time or someone who’s ready but doesn’t know where to start, I’m here to help you take that next step.

A big announcement is on the horizon. Let’s finish this year strong!
